AI trends

As I predicted last year, 2025 will be the year when AI truly enters our daily lives. The impact of AI on work, play, learning, and everything else we do cannot be ignored.

So where do we go from here? I believe we will start to see the long-term impacts begin to emerge in 2026.

AI will continue to create amazing opportunities, from improving health and education standards to advancing scientific discoveries and simplifying our lives in many ways.

At the same time, society will be forced to deal with rising energy costs and social challenges, as well as issues of trust, privacy, and regulation.

Will the AI bubble burst? It may. But the bursting of the Dot-Com Bubble in 2000 did not significantly slow the adoption of the Internet.

From an economic perspective, companies that have fully embraced AI will continue to need to prove that it can actually drive growth and value.

But for most of us, the stories that matter most are the lasting and meaningful ways in which AI is transforming the very fabric of our daily lives.

With that in mind, here are some of the trends that I believe will be on the top agenda as we enter the second half of this decade.

1. AI Agents in Everyday Life

There’s no doubt that Agentic AI (self-acting AI) was the buzzword of 2025. 2026 will be the year that the impact of these autonomous, task-based assistants truly takes shape.

Consider ChatGPT—but in addition to answering questions and generating content, this assistant can also perform everyday tasks. For example, ordering groceries, planning trips, or interacting with smart home devices to manage household chores.

In the workplace, AI will move beyond providing assistance to coordinating complex projects and communicating with external collaborators and systems to achieve short-term and long-term goals.

2. The Synthetic Content Crisis

By one estimate, up to 90% of online content could be synthetically generated by AI by 2026.

We’ve already seen it used to spread misinformation and undermine democratic processes. But even if it’s not created for nefarious purposes, this vast amount of content risks drowning out real human voices.

There’s no doubt that synthetic content is useful in areas where we can analyze and gain insights from data that are too fast for humans to process.

But when it’s used to replace human insight and experience, it risks being flooded with a flood of inauthentic, generic, and low-value content.

The challenge for those who have valuable experiences to share in 2026 will be to find ways to ensure that their creations and human voices rise above the “AI slop” and remain visible.

3. The Future of Work

In 2026, we will begin to see the long-term impact that AI and automation will have on the way we work. This will include the emergence of new jobs and the inevitable loss of traditional jobs.

Job roles will change as knowledge workers hand over their routine and administrative tasks to AI and agents.

It will also become clearer what value emerging roles such as Prompt Engineers, AI Integration Specialists and Ethics Experts can bring to organizations.

On the other hand, some companies will likely continue to see job cuts and job losses as they seize the opportunity to reduce headcount and the resulting costs.

4. AI in the Physical World

This trend includes the increasing influence of AI on the physical systems and mechanisms around us.

This refers to the increasingly important autonomous vehicles, humanoid robotic workers that will take over physical labor in warehouses, construction, and healthcare settings, and the growing networks of interconnected devices that make up the Internet of Things (IoT).

In 2026, AI will no longer just power the apps on our phones or the software we use on our PCs. As regulations and security constraints mature, AI will permeate our homes, industries, and workplaces. It is becoming a visible presence in our world, redefining the way we interact with technology.

5. The Political and Trade Destabilization of AI

Governments around the world are now well aware of the advantages that AI will create in everything from economic production to the ability to wage war.

Propaganda aimed at influencing elections is widely used to manipulate synthetic content. Trade restrictions on AI hardware are also being used to limit the competitiveness of rival economies.

With the exception of nuclear weapons, there is no precedent for a technology with the potential to shake the global balance of power to this extent.

World leaders know this well. So we will see more abuses of markets and supply chains in 2026 as we try to control this technology and the spread of data that fuels it.

6. Invisible AI

As AI becomes a part of everyday life, it will take on many of the characteristics of other era-defining changes, such as industry, electricity, or communications.

What this means is that when we notice the impact of AI, it will no longer be something to point out, but something we take for granted.

Children born in the past decade will likely take it for granted that they can have natural, human-like conversations with the devices and machines they use every day. This will no longer be “AI,” but the way things are.

7. Everyday AI in Healthcare

This year, an everyday healthcare essential that has been in every doctor’s medicine cabinet for over 100 years got a major upgrade thanks to AI. This new stethoscope can analyze heart rhythms and detect problems like heart attacks in seconds.

These innovations represent the integration of AI into everyday, traditional healthcare procedures and practices.

AI is already being used routinely to help doctors diagnose diseases, monitor patient recovery, and discover new drugs, so this stethoscope could be another way to move from the experimental stage to general medical use by 2026.

8. Energy-Efficient AI

The increasing demand for electricity from AI is becoming an issue that even the most ardent advocates cannot ignore.

With the U.S. Department of Energy predicting that data centers will consume 12% of the nation’s electricity by 2028, the need to find cleaner, more sustainable energy sources is more urgent than ever.

By 2026, this will be a central part of the AI conversation. This will be tied to AI innovations, such as improving the efficiency of the systems used to power and cool millions of processors.

It will also include innovative ways to generate energy, such as the Mini Nuclear Power Plants being developed by Rolls-Royce.

Bottom Line

As AI continues to evolve at a rapid pace, 2026 will be the year when these emerging technologies reshape the very foundations of our daily lives.

From revolutionizing industries to creating new ethical dilemmas, AI will present both opportunities and challenges.

For businesses, workers, and individuals alike, staying ahead of these AI trends will be essential to survive and thrive in the coming decade.
